Responsive Call to Worship: Psalm 9: 1-2; 118: 28; 13: 5; 69: 30
Leader: I will give thanks to you, Lord, with all my heart; I will tell of all your wonderful deeds. I will be glad and rejoice in you; I will sing the praises of your name, O Most High.
All: You are my God, and I will praise you; you are my God, and I will exalt you.
Leader: I trust in your unfailing love; my heart rejoices in your salvation.
All: I will praise God’s name in song and glorify him with thanksgiving.
Prayer of Adoration
Hymn of Praise: Hymnal #164 O For a Thousand Tongues
We Confess Our Faith
Responsive Reading: New City Catechism Questions 7, 8, 9; Matthew 22: 37
Leader: What does the law of God require?
All: Personal, perfect, and perpetual obedience; that we love God with all our heart, soul, mind, and strength; and love our neighbors as ourselves. What God forbids should never be done and what God commands should always be done.
Leader: What is the law of God stated in the Ten Commandments?
All: You shall have no other gods before me. You shall not make for yourself an idol in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below – you shall not bow down to them or worship them. You shall not misuse the name of the Lord your God. Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy. Honor your father and your mother. You shall not murder. You shall not commit adultery. You shall not steal. You shall not give false testimony. You shall not covet.
Leader: What does God require in the first, second, and third commandments?
All: First, that we know and trust God as the only true and living God. Second, that we avoid all idolatry and do not worship God improperly. Third, that we treat God’s name with fear and reverence, honoring also his Word and works.
Leader: Jesus said, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment.”
We Confess Our Sin
Call to Confession: 1 John 1:8,9
Leader: If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. But if we confess our sins, God is faithful and just. He will forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. In humility and faith let us confess our sin to God.
Silent Confession of Sin
Corporate Prayer of Confession:
All: Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against You in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved You with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. For these things we are truly sorry and humbly repent. For the sake of Your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us, and forgive us that we may delight in Your will, and walk in Your ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen.
Responsive Assurance of Pardon: Hebrews 10: 16 – 17
Leader: “This is the covenant that I will make with them, after those days,” says the Lord: “I will put my laws on their hearts, and write them on their minds…I will remember their sins and misdeeds no more.” Through the blood of the New Covenant in Christ you are forgiven!
All: Praise be to God.
